Why isn't my Threads video download working?

Nine causes cover almost every failure: a profile link instead of a post link, a private account, a deleted post, a mixed media post, an unloaded page, a missing save step, an iOS permission, a Threads platform change, or a browser extension blocking the request.

Work through the one matching your symptom. They're ordered by how often they come up.

Fix 1: "Invalid threads URL"

Cause: You've pasted a profile link rather than a post link, or the post is private or deleted.

A profile link looks like threads.com/@username and ends at the username. A post link continues past it with a post identifier. Only the second one works.

The fix:

  1. Open the specific post, not the profile.
  2. Tap the paper airplane icon on that post.
  3. Tap Copy link.
  4. Paste it again.

If the link is definitely a post link and the error persists, the post is private or has been deleted. See fixes 2 and 8.

Fix 2: Nothing happens when you paste

Cause: Usually a private account. Sometimes the link didn't copy properly.

The fix: Open the profile and check for a padlock or a "This account is private" notice. If it's private, stop here. This one can't be fixed. Private posts are visible only to approved followers, and no tool can reach them.

Fix 3: You got a photo when you wanted the video

Cause: A mixed media post. The tool grabbed the first item rather than the one you wanted.

The fix: Use a tool that lists every item in the post separately and labels it by type. A post with three photos and a video should show four items, not one guess. The Threads downloader does that.

Fix 4: Only one file came back from a post with several

Cause: Same as fix 3. The tool takes the first item and stops.

The fix: Check the full list rather than taking the first result.

Fix 5: Download button never appears

The download button appears only after the tool has loaded the post. Paste the link first, then tap Download.

Fix 6: It downloaded but I can't find it

On Android, check Downloads then Gallery. On iPhone, Safari saves to Files, not Photos. Open the file, tap Share, then Save Video. Details are on the iPhone page and the Android page.

Fix 7: iPhone: Save Video does nothing

Cause: The Photos permission is set to Limited or off. iOS fails the save silently, with no error at all.

The fix: Settings, Apps, Photos. Toggle access off and back on. If it still fails, save to Files instead.

Fix 8: Worked before, doesn't now

Usually a Threads change. It gets fixed server side, so try again shortly.

Fix 9: Nothing loads at all

More common on desktop. Open the page in a private or incognito window, which disables most extensions. If it works there, an extension is the cause.

Is Threads having issues today?

Threads goes down occasionally like any platform. If the Threads app itself is slow or failing to load posts, no downloader will work either, because the media has to be reachable in the first place.
